Christian JPOP - does it exist?

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Fri Jul 16, 2004 2:59 pm

Just curious. I mean, if they have modern churches in Japan, then surely they have Christian JPOP/JROCK? Anyone know of any? (if it exists)

I actually think they do, depending on what your version of J-pop is. If it's Japanese people singing to pop music then I do believe there's Christian J-pop. I have a link to what I think is an japanese Christian radio but it's in my other computer. I'll try to post the link up later. ^^

I think I actually found the link from one of the threads in CAA. And now, it seems the link isn't working!!! >_< The domain is still there though : http://www.gospel.ne.jp/

But I have no idea where the contents went ^^;; I *did* find the directory for the page... so I think you can still sample some of the music: http://www.gospel.ne.jp/~hironao/

Found on of the previous index pages as well: http://www.gospel.ne.jp/~hironao/Gj-stream.html

Gah... what happened?? T__T

Yeah... A much bigger percent of South Koreans are Christian than Japanese... Less than 1 percent of the Japanese population is Christian.

There is a thriving Japanese fellowship at the University across the street from me, so I'm hoping that some of them will go back to Japan and make Christian Jpop or Jrock.

I actually saw some Japanese praise and worship CDs at our local Goodwill store a few weeks ago. Couldn't afford them, though. :sniffle:

Hyde is *not* a Christian, it's just wishful thinking by some people, who see a reference to Christianity and make a big thing out of it. I hear it's popular in Japan to make references to America, and Christianity is usually considered something mysterious to them.

Well, Christianity is on the rise in Japan, so I won't be surprised if we start hearing some Christian artists in the near future. ^_^d

Hmmm, I'd say that song is generic enough that Josh's explanation could cover it.
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

^^ I thought you guys might be interested in this--my Mom works for a missions organazation called World Venture. One of their missionary couples in Japan--Ken and Bola--use music to witness to Japanese people. ^^

Here's the e-mail my Mom sent me:
Direct them to
http://www.kenandbola.com.
There is a link on there about Christian artists in Japan (mostly
music).
Also, I know that they have some type of competition or auditions or
something for Japanese musicians who write/perform original Japanese
Christian music of various types. Ken and Bola are very nice people and
I'm
sure would be happy to get email or whatever from interested people.
And by
the way, although they do the black gospel music, that isn't all they
do --
they do all different types of music and work with all different types
of
musicians and singers in Japan so I think they would know who to
connect
people to.

It sounds like Ken and Bola are doing a lot to help out Christian artists in Japan, so...who knows? Maybe one day we'll hear about a popular JPop band singing Christian lyrics. :thumb:

UC might get irritated with this grave digging but I'm happy this thread was ressurected. My parents get irritated when I listen to J-Pop or J-Rock because they are like "well what do the lyrics mean?" and stuff like that. I just like the sound of it but hey I might check out some of these bands. XD

Since this is here, and a question has been posed, I don't think there's harm in replying to a gravedug thread.

Anyway, in regards to Hyde, I recall reading an interview with him that was released during the Faith album's US tour. If I remember correctly, he said he wasn't religious, though he had felt a powerful spiritual quality about places such as churches and cathedrals, and wanted to capture that feeling in the lyrics.

Interesting. I've only recently discovered Jpop and Jrock through CAA and it looks and sounds interesting. Anyone know of any more links I could check out to listen to it and get more info? If you do, please reply or pm me with the links. I like expanding my horizons, especially in music.
