It has help section that you can download.

I have the GTK and GIMP 2.2 downloaded to my home computer but neither of them will open. It just keeps giving me the same old message. Does anyone know why it won't open or install?

I've never had the help work for me before either. Have you checked with your local library, I was surprised to find 3 books on the GIMP at my local one.

I'm a 100% GIMPer and I would have to agree. I couldn't figure out how to make a straight line for the longest time. But then when you figure it out you want the whole world to celebrate with you because life is so much easier (at least that part of it). By the way, you make a straight line by clicking where you want the line to begin, holding shift and then clicking where you want the line to end. If you guys have questions about it, I'd be glad to pretend like I have an answer.

Having the hardest time learning even how to draw a circle in GIMP. I draw and nothing shows up. :(

Don't mean to grave-dig. Ran a search because I figured someone here's used it.

Well, I don't feel like I'm gravedigging as this thread is stickied(like my K key on my keyboard!), so I'll just go ahead and ask my question.

How big is Gimp and would I just be better off spending the money on Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro and will Gimp work on Vista?

GIMP seems nice, but I don't see a "new layer via copy/cut" option anywhere. So I still stick with Photoshop.

Gimp 2.4 has been released now, and I'd say it's worth the upgrade if you haven't done so yet. I haven't put much time into using the new effects adn tools, but I like them, and I've heard it can use Photoshop brushes now, although I haven't tested this or seen it on an official site, so I'm not 100% sure on that.

Without downloading the translations or help files for Gimp 2.4, I've got two separate folders ((not sure why the second one was needed, but it was)) that are 31.5 & 11.5Mb, for a grand total of 43Mb. And I'm not srue about the older versions, but 2.4 says it works on Vista.

I am running GIMP on Vista. The only problem I have is that I have to use the pen tablet--the normal mouse maps to the wrong place. But, I hear this isn't a universal problem and it obviously hasn't bugged me enough to do anything about it.

As for whether or not it's better to get Photoshop, I find I can make things faster and of better quality with Photoshop, but nothing I do with it justifies shelling out hundreds of dollars.

the few times I've used PS, I didn't like it as much, except for a few effects that it had that I couldn't easily replicate on GIMP, but I think alot of my not liking it is due to the fact that I'm used to GIMP and too lazy to overcoem new learning curves, the same reason I don't do much w/ flash, since I don't have it at home and only have it at work.

Guys, I wonder if GIMPshop is any good? Just curious for those who tried.
Thanks.

One of the annoying things I found about GIMP was that there were no plain ol' line tools. I prefer Krita over GIMP, although I doubt Windows users can get that on their system without installing QT libraries and the lot. Probably more trouble than it's worth, but it's what I use and I love it. (I've never done really detailed images anyway, just touch-ups and random stuff. If I need professional art software, Photoshop CS2 works with WINE.)

Although, you can just use the pencil, click where you want the line to start, hold shift, and click where you want it to end, that'll make a 1 px line. That's what I always do.

I have the problem with the fonts, but I can't seem to fix it the way it was suggested earlier in this thread. I have Windows XP and there are a number of different user accounts. I can't run GIMP on my user account but I could actually run it off my brother's. Recently that one is giving my the font problem too. Is anyone able to help me out?
