RIP Arthur C. Clark (1917-2008)

This thread is to commemorate the writer Arthur C. Clark, most famous for the book and movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Wow, kinda quiet...
I tried to read Clarke when I was about 11 years old. Started with "2001: A Space Odyssey" (didn't see the movie until I was in high school), but couldn't finish; then tried "Rendezvous with Rama", again to no avail.
It wasn't until I was an adult that I made it through "2001" and "2010". Still haven't done "Rama". I can't say he was a significant impact on my sci fi reading (that would belong more to Bradbury, Niven, and Heinlein), but he certainly shaped others...

He also devised Clarke's Laws.One of them is that any advanced alien technology might appear to be magic.

Usually credited with coming up with the basic concept of the communications satellite. And, he was already classic enough when I was in High School that Childhood's End and Imperial Earth were both on our reading list in English. I think the only other SF works on there were Bradbury.
I liked the Rama books okay, but 'A Fall of Moondust' will always be my favorite Clarke work. Probably the first grown-up novel that gripped me hard enough to finish in one sitting.

I suppose though most people will remember him for 2001:A Space Odyssey.

Wow... Amazingly, that comes as a bit of a shock...
I've never read "2001: A Space Odyssey", but I did read his book "Rendezvous with Rama" awhile back. It wasn't that bad of a book, really. A little creepy, but not bad. It's actually one of the few science fiction novels, and the only book of his I've read.
I guess you could say that he'll be missed by one more person.
