Leon

My service dog, Leon, has an appointment with a specialist at Texas A&M on Nov. 15th. This is our last-ditch effort to try to get his allergy issues under control (he has stopped responding to the treatments of his dermatologist).

Please pray. There is a good possibility that I will have to return Leon to his program --if we cannot find a treatment for him that is feasible for me financially. Donations have been coming in, but at a trickle. I can no longer eat the costs of having to rush him to the vet every other month.

Thankfully, A&M will let me make payments, which will buy us some time to continue to fundraise/apply for assistance.

Leon is my lifeline, my partner, my best friend --I do not want to have to say goodbye. :(

Leon's appointment at A&M went well!

Woke up at dark-thirty (5:45 am). Was pretty cold in the apartment. Turned on the heater. It set off the fire alarm. Turned off the heater and brought out the itty-bitty space heater to use while I got ready.

Got on the road by a little before 8. Took a little detour in College Station due to missing a little loop-de-doop that I needed to take. But arrived pretty close to on time --we were taken right back to a room and were seen pretty quickly.

This is likely to be something very treatable! We have a plan! They said food is likely to be the culprit--so he's to be on only his kibble for 4 months (no treats--the treats could be causing the issue) and we'll get this skin infection taken care of (they're doing a culture to find the right med for it).

Said that should take care of it --allergies are most likely NOT environmental because he has not responded at all to steroid treatment and because his symptoms have been the same all year.

The vet dermatologist was amazing! She gave us free samples of topical medication and didn't charge for the skin scrapings. And she gave me her business card --she said she may be able to get help through the vet hospital for Leon's tooth. And Leon was such a cooperative, flirty patient--even through the skin scrapings.

They even snagged the vet dentist while we were there to come in and look at Leon's tooth and give a second opinion. He said that x-rays would need to be done to determine what to do with the tooth --and that an extraction would only have a few hundred dollars in difference with the root canal. If the tooth has not died, he would recommend the root canal. Said we have months to make the decision --so not something we have to decide right away.

That was quite a day! Hopefully they will be able to get this all cleared up --and Leon and I will have a long partnership ahead of us. :)
